For me, nothing invokes melancholy better than music. That’s what makes fanvids so powerful. Take a clip and play it with different songs and you’ll set a totally different mood. While comedic, spoofy fan vids have their place (and I’ll be featuring some of my favorites later on in the ‘thon), my favorite vids are the ones that make my chest achy and my throat tight. Here’s my top five fan vids that make me cry.
This one is just not fair. Explosions in the Sky music is already so powerful. Normally I’m in it for the lyrics, but this band is a definite exception. When I listen to them I feel like I’m in my own movie, like they would be the soundtrack to the most dramatic moments of my life. Pair one of their songs with an OT5 video and I’m a goner. (Especially watching this now – the irony of Zayn’s opening words are lost on no one.) The group hugs are the best part, I think.
I know this song was on one of the Twilight soundtracks but there has never been a more perfect Arthur/Merlin song EVER. There have been a million Merthur vids made with this song. My #1 has been made private, but this is a close #2.
*weeps uncontrollably* I’ve watched this video so many times in the last couple of months. It’s so perfectly edited, and the song is so well suited and sad, and and and. *keeps weeping*
The way the clips in this vid are grouped is incredible, and the pacing is so great. The way the clips of Jo are interspersed with movie clips, the constant reinforcement that Harry finds a home in Hogwarts, in magic, in his new family, and the song itself all come together and make my eyes burn.

I have a collection of QaF vids from back when I was active in the fandom and the show was on air, pre-YouTube being all the rage. Back when people had to upload the videos to their own servers and share YouSendIt links. Anyway. There are several that are sad, because … shut up, I can’t talk about this, JUST WATCH THIS AND CRY ABOUT BRIAN KINNEY OKAY.
